As the air turns crisp and the leaves begin to fall, October is the perfect month to get your garden ready for winter while setting the stage for a beautiful spring. Here are five essential jobs to tick off your list this month š
š· 1. Plant Spring Bulbs
Nowās the time to plant tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses for a colourful display next spring. Choose a sunny spot, plant them in groups for the best effect, and remember ā plant bulbs three times their depth for strong, healthy blooms.
š” Top tip: Weāve got a wide range of spring bulbs in stock, so pop in and choose your favourites before they sell out!

šŖ“ 2. Refresh Your Containers & Baskets
Replace tired summer plants with winter pansies, violas, and cyclamen for a splash of colour through the colder months. Add evergreen ivy or small conifers for texture and structure.

š 3. Tidy Up Fallen Leaves
Regularly rake or sweep leaves off lawns and paths to prevent them becoming slippery or smothering the grass. Add them to your compost heap ā theyāll break down beautifully into leaf mould, perfect for enriching your soil next year.

šæ 4. Cut Back & Prune
Trim back faded perennials and lightly prune shrubs to keep everything neat before winter sets in. Leave seed heads on some plants like echinacea and alliums for wildlife to enjoy ā they look stunning with a touch of frost too.

š¼ 5. Protect Tender Plants
Move delicate pots into a sheltered spot or greenhouse. Wrap vulnerable plants with fleece or hessian to protect them from frost. A little prep now saves a lot of damage later!
