Garden Centre Assistant Manager

We are looking for a friendly, outgoing and energetic Assistant Manager to join the team in our family run garden centre. We are currently undergoing our biggest development yet, which is part of our 10-year site plan that we started 3 years ago. The development, which is opening in March 2024, will really put the garden centre on the map.

As an Assistant Garden Centre Manager, you will be helping lead and manage a team of colleagues across the whole store and taking responsibility for the whole centre when both managers are absent. You'll work closely with managers & department heads to ensure maximum sale opportunities all whilst furthering development of your teams in all areas of customer service, merchandising standards and product knowledge. This role is very much 'hands on' and it is a great advantage if you have a passion and understanding for gardening and garden related products as our customers expect our entire team to be knowledgeable and to offer advice.

You will support both managers with all aspects of the day to day running of the garden centre (both inside and outside retail) and hold duty manager responsibilities for the entire site. You will be responsible for the management of customer interactions, sales and service within the garden centre; while helping the company achieve its goals.

Duties:

  • Opening and/or closing the store

  • Supervising four payment tills at busy times as well as the customer service desk

  • Taking payments and dealing with refunds and exchanges following all policies and procedures

  • Managing and motivating a team of staff

  • Providing excellent customer service

  • Overseeing the day-to-day running of the garden centre

  • Assisting with stock management and ordering

  • Housekeeping, merchandising and presentation upkeep

  • Helping to develop and implement new marketing and promotional initiatives

  • Ensuring that sales opportunities are maximised through daily tasks of ensuring products are priced correctly

  • Ensure signage is accurate and that displays are changed on a regular basis to keep the store fresh and seasonal

  • Support the shop team with stock management ensuring that goods are checked in correctly and in a timely manner, complete regular stock takes and ensure they are accurate as well as ensuring wastage is recorded

  • Support the plant area team

  • Serve customers in person and over the phone. You will be trained to be a till user.

  • To be a first aider (training provided)

  • To be a fork lift driver (training can be provided)

Ideal candidate
The ideal candidate will preferably come from a Garden centre background with proven supervisor qualities and a passion for plants & for driving sales. You will have great knowledge of the retail world as you will be assisting everything that happens within the centre (outside and inside) You will take initiative, developing best practices and overseeing the organisation all while working closely with both directors & managers. As well as this we look for that 'can do' approach and be able to respond to challenges.

Rota:

45hrs

One day off in the week

Alternate weekend working

Experience:

 

  • Retail management: 1 year (preferred)

  • Management: 1 year (preferred)

  • Retail sales: 4 years (required)

  • Supervising experience: 2 years (preferred)

  • Customer service: 2 years (required)

  • Licence/Certification:

 

 

  • Driving Licence (required)
