Usually - generally the bigger the pot, the better. It's easier to water and feed. Pots can of course be moved around to create different effects.

q2 What compost should I use for rhododendrons?

Ericaceous, an acidic compost - usually in pink bags. Rhododendrons hate lime - as do hydrangeas, magnolias, heathers, azaleas and camellias.

Annuals generally grow and flower in the same season, then die. Perennials should overwinter for several seasons.

q4 When should I start seed potatoes?

Lay them out in trays (or egg boxes) to start sprouting (chitting) in January / February.
First earlies can be planted from early March and later varieties progressively through to the end of March. (NB Worcester area)
The traditional day to plant potatoes is Good Friday.

Plant seeds into compost and cover with horticultural vermiculite - this holds moisture and also allows the seeds to come up more easily.

q7 When can I plant out bedding plants?

Frost tender varieties (Marigolds, Lobelia, Busy Lizzie, Begonias, Geraniums, Fuschias etc.) can be planted out from Mid-May to Mid-June - but protect them if there is any danger of frost.
(Hardy bedding plants (Pansy, Polyanthus etc.) can be planted out from March.)

q8 Is foliar feeding any good?

In our experience root feeding is better - although foliar feeding can be successful if care is taken to follow dosage instructions exactly - if the concentration is too strong there is a danger of scorching plants - especially in sunny weather. We find that root feeding is generally more successful - and less prone to problems.

q9 Which compost is best to use for Hanging Baskets?

Ideally you should use a 'Hanging Basket Compost' - these usually contain a wetting agent that helps the compost absorb water more easily.

q10 How often should I water a Hanging Basket?

On warm, windy days in a sunny position, baskets should be watered twice a day - morning and evening. Generally hanging baskets should be watered once a day, even if it rains.

q11 How often should I feed a Hanging Basket?

Generally, use a fertilizer once a week. If your basket is very green and lacking flowers, use a tomato fertilizer feed once a week. Remember to follow dosage instructions carefully.

q12 What's the best way to prevent needle drop on my real Christmas Tree?

Norway Spruce is the traditional Christmas Tree and is susceptible to needle drop. For best results stand the tree in a bucket of water (not hot!) at least overnight, or for a few days if time, before bringing into the house - this will allow water to be taken up.

Once in the house, place the tree in the coolest place possible, away from radiators.

An alternative is to choose one of the new less-needle drop varieties which we also stock.
